This site, cicoria.com, is a personal technology blog operated by Shawn Cicoria. The opinions expressed here are my own and do not represent those of my employer or any affiliated organization. This page explains what information is collected when you visit, how it is used, and the choices you have.
Information collected
This site does not require you to register, log in, or submit personal information to read its content. Comments, contact forms, and newsletter sign-ups are not offered.
The following limited information is collected automatically:
- Analytics data — I use Google Analytics to understand which posts are read and how visitors arrive at the site. Google Analytics may collect your IP address (typically truncated/anonymized), device and browser type, operating system, referring URL, and pages visited. This data is aggregated and is not used to identify you personally.
- Server/hosting logs — The site’s hosting provider may keep standard request logs (IP address, user agent, timestamp, requested URL) for operational and security purposes such as detecting abuse.
- Cookies and local storage — Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser to measure usage. The site itself does not set tracking cookies. Embedded third-party content (for example, YouTube videos or GitHub gists) may set their own cookies when you load a page that includes them.
How the information is used
Collected information is used solely to:
- Measure traffic and understand which content is useful.
- Diagnose technical problems and protect the site from abuse.
- Improve the quality and organization of posts.
The information is not sold, rented, or shared with third parties for marketing.
Third-party services
Pages may link to or embed content from third-party services, including but not limited to:
- Google Analytics
- GitHub (code samples, gists, repository links)
- YouTube / Vimeo (embedded videos)
- LinkedIn (profile and article links)
- Image hosts referenced in posts
When you interact with embedded content or follow an external link, the third party’s own privacy policy applies. I do not control and am not responsible for the practices of those services.
Your choices
You can:
- Block cookies, use private/incognito browsing, or use a browser extension that disables analytics scripts.
- Install the Google Analytics Opt-Out Browser Add-on.
- Use a “Do Not Track” setting in your browser. This site respects DNT to the extent supported by the analytics provider.
Children
This site is not directed at children under 13, and I do not knowingly collect information from children.
Data retention
Aggregate analytics data is retained according to Google Analytics’ default retention settings. Server logs are kept for a limited period by the hosting provider for operational purposes.
Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated from time to time. Material changes will be reflected in the lastmod date at the top of this page. Continued use of the site after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
