Shawn Cicoria has been a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) for the past decade at Microsoft and a Principal Engineering leader in Microsoft’s Industry/Commercial Software Engineering group, where he focuses on generative AI, distributed systems along with cloud, data, and AI/ML solutions. He has authored many books and technical posts for Microsoft’s ISE Developer Blog and maintains active open-source work on GitHub. Beyond industry, he has taught computer science at Pace University and has spoken publicly about NJIT’s M.S. in Data Science program. Lately, his writing has highlighted modern observability practices with OpenTelemetry.

Most recently at Microsoft, Shawn has led large-scale Big Data and analytics solutions on Databricks on Azure, including lakehouse architecture, performance tuning, and cost optimization. He designed and implemented Databricks governance patterns (Unity Catalog, access controls, data lineage/quality, and SDLC guardrails) for secure multi-workspace and multi-tenant delivery. He has also delivered GenAI capabilities on Azure (RAG, vector search, evaluation, safety controls) integrated with governed lakehouse data. Shipped production releases include the Ecolab RushReady AI-backed platform, a Journal Entry Generative AI solution, and an AP Exception Support customer-facing solution, achieving roughly 90% reduction in response time.

Shawn is a cloud engineer and architect known for working in high-scale distributed systems. He has held engineering leadership roles at Microsoft, Avanade, SunGard Securities Finance, State Street Bank, UBS (fka Swiss Bank Corporation), and has served as an Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) Ranger and Agile/Scrum Leader. At SunGard, he served as CTO and VP of Product Management, where he founded and built OmniConnect (an ISV integration product that was acquired by SunGard) and created the OmniLend message broker, generating $5 million in sales in its first year.

He co-authored Pro WCF: Practical Microsoft SOA Implementation (Apress, 2007), contributing chapters on WCF security, reliability, transactions, and interoperability, a work cited widely in developer literature. He also co-authored Better Unit Testing with Microsoft Fakes (Microsoft, 2013) and contributed to the Team Foundation Service Preview guide as part of the Microsoft ALM Rangers.

Shawn is an expert in modern authentication and authorization implementation, security, federation for cloud native platforms, apps and systems integration.

Shawn Cicoria completed a PhD at Pace University in 2017 on Risks and Patterns in Migrating Applications to Public Cloud Platforms, reflecting a sustained focus on cloud architecture and modernization.

Beyond writing and research, he appears in community and industry venues, for example, a Microsoft/Angelbeat testimonial video and a 2020 NJIT highlight featuring remarks on the M.S. in Data Science program.

Today, his public work emphasizes hands-on engineering across AI/ML, data, and cloud-native systems, alongside open-source contributions.
